Finally getting a chance to see the movie Avatar, there are a few things people tend to forget. There is some blog chatter and twitter rumblings of how this movie treats disabilities. I think the bigger picture is what do people take away from it.
First off, remember this is a story. Fiction is not reality. What could be reality is how sci-fi of the past has given way to great new technology of today. Who would have thought a communicator from Star Trek would be an iphone of today.
Next, to those that do...

So we have the spotlight on the big dance in Florida, the Super Bowl. People all around the world are watching. If you were on the field, could you imagine all eyes on you? That is what a lot of teens feel when they walk through the doors of their school.
Guess what? When you feel good about yourself, everything else falls in place. Self-Esteem is about you, not about others. When you wake up and look in...

The heading actually says a lot. Growing up with a disability and being mainstreamed in 4th grade I found out first hand what happens when you mix a lot of different people in a building and forget to tell them about the many differences people have.
Unfortunately, there is a big trend of not explaining differences. Watch social blogs or people in public and you can recognize those who get shocked for...

The following is just a quick glance at a few numbers. I myself am not big into stats. I like to look past them and find the solution to these troubling stats. Why these numbers are important is that they are rising. They are also important because many may not realize that a large number of these teens have disabilities. However the exact number is not known because for some reason that part of the...

Part of our self-esteem has to be remembering what we do well. It is very easy to take them for granted because we do them all the time. Cherishing what we do well and keeping that in mind will keep positive thoughts going.
For example, I take for granted my writing and speaking abilities, yet am told by others how great they are. For me I just do it so often it doesn’t seem like anything special....

In a quest to keep motivation and self-esteem up, here is a great poem that may help.
What is Success?
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others,
To leave the world a bit better; whether...

OK, here’s the thing. You think your self-esteem is good and you’re cruisin’ through your day. You’re concentrating only on you. Oh, no, that’s your exit and you’re two lanes over. No problem, you’ll just cut over and take your exit. You’re OK now.
If you were the only person in the world, self-esteem would be useless. So, being that there are lots of people...

For the last few days on here and on twitter, We’ve looked at a glass and how it is filled. We’ve watched ourselves around others to see if we’ve kept a positive attitude or fallen into the regular negativity around us. How are you doing so far? Keep an eye on your attitude as we move forward because awareness is just the beginning.
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000...

Well, how did you do? Did you actually review your actions for the last 24 hours?
I did and noticed when I am actively watching my outlook, I’m more glass half full. I think it comes from paying attention to it. It’s easy to get caught up in the negative day to day because we don’t actively view ourselves from a positive perspective.
Granted I semi-quietly snarled at a driver because of...

You have a choice. I have a choice. Do we see the glass half empty or half full? I start here because it can be really this simple. Each day we go through the moments and we can look at each of the negatives or the positives.
Do we sit in traffic and scream waiting for the light to change, or yelling at the person who just cut us off? Do you sit in class staring at the clock waiting for the end of class?...
