***Faire warning to not be eating your Thanksgiving feast while reading for it may end up in your neighbor’s eye.
This is the real reason for Thanksgiving.
The Mayflower left mid-July. All seemed fine. Yet as they ran into many problems, including a downed mast, the journey was long. Many, like Edward Thompson were seen lurching as badly as the ship. Conversations of giving up and returning were uttered. Ellen and Mary More were just a few of the ladies heaving on the poop deck. Why they were up there, no one knows.
Finally come November, land was sighted. When they landed Humility Cooper could be heard, “Terra firma!”. Moses Fletcher said, “Thank God!”
Some local natives saw this motley crew coming off the ship and at first thought they were all tipping too much ale. But soon realized it was just pilgrims. Pushing the desire to roast the white meat, they welcomed the newcomers.
The natives were about to sit down for dinner, so they asked if the pilgrims would like to join them. William Bradford spoke for the group, “Thanks for giving!”
Thus Thanksgiving started.
