Have you ever been to a restaurant with a friend with a vision impairment? Well, either you had to read the menu to them or the waiter had to. While few people would object to being read a menu, a little thinking about this procedure makes you realize that it’s less independent for the diner.
A recent visit to a Cracker Barrel restaurant garnered this photo. They have already put into place menus available for the more than 10 million Americans with visual impairments.
For those that have not put together a menu like this, there is a simple, rather cheap solution for restaurants is to have large-print size menus available. It doesn’t cost a lot to run to the quick print place and have the menu enlarged by photocopier. The solution offers more independence for those diners who can take advantage of this access option. Check to see if your favorite restaurants offer this, if not, make the suggestion to them.
While surfing the internet, I quickly found one place that will transform your menu into braille for you: Braille Works. It’s just one option to bringing more customers in and increasing the bottom line of any restaurant.
