To Ask Or Not To Ask

Speaking with a large crowd of elementary students last week, one thing was evidently clear: Lots of questions.

I broke the ice right away talking about things that were different and things that were the same between them and myself. Obviously, the first student said age. Next thing was the obvious lack of hair on my head. A family trait I like to flaunt, a receding hair line. Although I did have another fall guy near by. The principal of the school was completely bald.

It wasn’t hard with a quick smile and humor to get the students to keep talking and asking questions. This was my goal, instead of just giving a speech. One of the things that keeps people, including kids, from learning more about the differences around them is not asking questions. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Learning is all about studying, researching, but most importantly asking questions. We all are constantly learning even after finishing school. Start a new job and there will be more to learn. Social learning is just as important. Learn about those around you. If you do, you may find strengths others have that may help finish a project faster, win a competition before others, or simply help you learn more.

Just because a person may have a limitation in one area, doesn’t mean there isn’t a different way to do something. Through history, people with disabilities have constantly thought outside the box and come up with inventions, gadgets, and methods to do things more effectively. Why? Because they have to look at things differently. Wouldn’t you want someone like that on your team?

Start asking more questions. It will be the best thing you do today.

Well, I was so successful in getting the students to ask questions, I’ve been getting letters because I ran out of time to answer questions at the school, so I must get back to writing more responses. See you soon.
