Hung Up On The Process

It’s a full summer again, weddings, events, work, and more, which is good. The most recent event, Lifest, refreshed my understanding of what we are all doing here. Partially as helping one another live through whatever means possible. In this rediscovery, one thing pushed its way to the front.

With the laws we have in place and requirements, things are suppose to be done in certain ways. IEP’s to help children learn, the ADA to help bring better access to places are just two examples. But there is a lot of push back on these processes. For every action there is an equal or greater reaction. Heck, read any political blog and then read the comments. How about a process of yin and yang whereby they are complementary opposites. I’ll go back to my political analogy just one more time. Aren’t the two political parties opposites, but both there to make the government stronger, not sit on the hill and argue which side is wrong?

Let’s get to the heart of the matter. What is the reason to have any of these laws or requirements in the first place? Us, the people. Let’s break it down further. Why is an IEP put in place? To help students who learn differently. Let’s break it down further. One student, having difficulty because of a learning disability is sitting in a classroom struggling to keep up. The teacher may have tried everything she has to help him, yet doesn’t want to slow down the learning process of the entire class.

One train of thought is to incorporate multiple learning styles into the classroom. There are many teachers that do this, and do it successfully. But many do not. Hence the need to put into place a requirement, and IEP, to help this one student succeed. So we have this in place, yet the teacher and the parent disagree. Who is being left out of this equation. The student.

We can go round and round on the issues of the legalities of the ADA or why, even with IEPs, students are not getting the attention they need. Let’s put aside these differences. Our purposes here are to help people succeed. If there are limitations, which everyone has, then we need to help.

One of the sayings I’ve used on my blog before is stop complaining, go solve the problem. It’s time to stop questioning why and time to help the student find the best way to learn. It’s time to make businesses open their doors to everyone. It’s time to work with what we got and make it better. Barriers aren’t things that were already there. Barriers are created. Are you creating barriers by questioning the actions of others or are you waist deep in the problem itself digging together to find the solution?
