Friends With Tools

We (my friend and I) have started our week of summer fun that we partake in every year for the last 6 years. One would think this would be no different from the last. One would be mistaken.

Not more than 2 hours after we arrive at Lifest, the left handlebar of Darrell’s wheelchair snaps off. Fortunately it didn’t toss Darrell out of the chair. But many thoughts raced through the minds at this time. One being we were 45 minutes away from any wheelchair repair shop. And Darrell was going to start his first shift within the next 2 hours.

Granted, I don’t think anyone would fault us, if we ran to get the chair fixed/get a replacement. But the next two hours brought many of our friends who we’ve met in previous years around us. One thought was to duct tape it. Another was to put a dowel or smaller pipe inside. Amazing what multiple minds come up with in a short period of time. During which I’m letting the lead of the team Darrell was suppose to help out on know.

She then makes a call to someone she knows who was also at Lifest working. He happens to work with wheelchairs in his day job, so he came over for a look. Next thing you know the two pieces are whisked away somewhere on the grounds to get soldered.

Long story, short…too late, I know…Darrell started his shift a bit late, but was back in full motion. Thursday we’ll go have it looked over and if need be then pick up a back up while a new part is ordered.

It shouldn’t amaze me, but it does, how a group of people can come together and support one another so well in good times and bad. No worries, after a good night’s sleep it’s back sharing of ourselves with others at Lifest. Hoping to give them an experience, like us, they will remember for years to come.
